Zinc and selenium – two cornerstones of the immune system.
Zinc is a mineral that affects a number of bodily functions. It is a co-factor in more than 200 enzymes, and participates in protein biosynthesis and nucleic acid metabolism. It is significant for normal growth, development, and reproductive function in humans, and is involved in the proper functioning of a number of organs.
Zinc deficiency may lead to fertility impairment. Special attention must be paid to zinc during pregnancy. Other symptoms of zinc deficiency include skin disorders, disorders of the immunity functions, and diarrhoea.
Selenium and its significance in the human body has been intensely studied during recent years. Selenium plays a significant role in protecting the body from free oxygen radicals (antioxidant). Other functions include regulation of thyroid hormones synthesis, support of the reproductive function – increase of sperm motility (it is present in the sperm flagellum). Selenium prevents platelet aggregation and the occurrence of clots. It is suitable in the prevention of cataracts and macular degeneration. It is advised to take selenium together with vitamin E.3
Symptoms of zinc deficiency – loss of appetite, impaired glucose tolerance, dermatitis, hair loss, scaly skin, brittle nails, white spots on the nails, neuropsychiatric problems, impaired wound healing, impaired function of the genitals, impacted reproductive function, impaired immune system function, metabolic disorders involving proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, impaired senses of taste and smell, growth disturbance.
Increased zinc intake is recommended for – growing children and young persons, active athletes, pregnant and breastfeeding women, elderly people, vegetarians and vegans, smokers, persons who regularly drink alcohol, persons suffering from zinc deficiency disorders (liver disorders, kidney disorders, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, diabetes, asthma, etc.)
Symptoms of selenium deficiency – more frequent occurrence of cardiovascular diseases (including ischaemic heart disease and heart attacks), increased risk of oncological diseases, detrimental effect on the immune system (immunodepression), increased risk of development of type 2 diabetes, faster skin ageing and wrinkling.
Increased selenium intake is recommended – during increased physical stress, for pregnant women, elderly people, during increased fat intake, infectious diseases, thyroid disorders, arthritis and other inflammatory diseases.
